Jenny and I must thank you again for our stay at your castle which we enjoyed greatly and hope to return one day. It is such a beautiful building and location and we liked so much that you have not made it to be too modern and too expensive so that only the super rich can enjoy it. Please do not change its character too much!! It's really special

Karen Brown's - TRAVEL GUIDES 1997 -2013 (16 YEARS) -K.B. Video for Castello di Ripa d’Orcia - K. B. Review Of This Property: The lesser-known area of Tuscany south of Siena makes a delightful discovery and the variety of landscapes within an 8-kilometer drive provides one of the most fascinating excursions in the region. Besides the charming hilltowns of Montepulciano, Pienza, and Montalcino, there are the abbeys of Monte Oliveto and Sant’Antimo, plus the thermal baths of Bagno Vignoni. A perfect base in this richly historical and natural area is the fairytale castle of the Aluffi Pentini Rossi family, theirs for the past 400 years or so and practically a village in itself. The family resides in the upper reaches of the castle while guests are accommodated in several separate farmers’ houses divided into a combination of apartments with one or two bedrooms, living room, and kitchenette, plus six simply and characteristically appointed bedrooms with country furniture. Rooms facing out have absolutely breathtaking views over the virgin valley (the same view that all guests enjoy from the lovely pool). Downstairs is the dining room with wood tables covered with cheery checked cloths, where breakfast and dinner are served using homegrown products. A common space for guests is the old granary, converted into a large cozy reading room with fireplace. A History Traveller Property

“Dear Countess, thank you for your family’s warm +friendly reception + attention to detail. The rooms were clean +very pleasant + the meals were very good… I Look forward to returning”

Thank you so very much for sharing your family recipe for Tiramisu’! As I said to you, this is my son’s absolute favorite dessert, and the Tiramisu’ I make for him bears no comparison to the Tiramisu’ your Mom made while we were on our stay at the castle. It was absolutely “divine”. He will be so excited when he comes to visit next month that I can make for him Tiramisu’ from a real Tuscan family’s recipe. However, I am sure that my product will not be as good as your Mom’s because there is always that very special “thing” that Mom’s give to cooking that can never be replicated. I would love to just watch your Mom cook and learn how she puts her recipes together, as to me she is the quintessence of Tuscan cooking. I will always remember each of you and your family’s warmth and sincerity. Your family home is heaven on earth—a monument in time, peaceful, in tune with Mother Nature in the val d’Orcia, and in touch with the stars in the heavens themselves. Your wines and olive oil—simply outstanding! Our visit to Castello di Ripa d’Orcia was a trip of a lifetime. The pictures we took of the val d’Orcia and the Castle are our reflective visions of a place that is now in our hearts, but the memory we take away is much greater. Our memory is of the gracious hospitality and warmth of Famiglia Aluffi Pentini Rossi, the beauty of val d’Orcia with its vineyards, olive trees and mountains and of course Castello di Ripa d’Orcia. I hope that one day we can return for a visit. Again, a most sincere thank you to your family for your gracious hospitality and for your family’s Tiramisu’ recipe—the best one in Tuscany and I dare say the World. If you are ever back in Florida, please consider a visit with our family. In great appreciation and wishing your family the best, JIM and JUNE F.

“This BNB is our favourite BNB . The scenery is beautiful and it is very peaceful. Food is excellent. We are very happy.”

As you drive up the long, white road, the castle comes into view:a thrilling sight.Ripa d'Orcia dates from 13th century, one of Siena's most important strongholds. The battlemented fortress (closed to the public) dominates the "borgo" encircled by small medieval dwellings. The family are descendants of the Piccolomini who acquired the estate in 1484 and are hugely proud of their heritage.Gran banquets and knights in shining armour may come to mind ...children will love it here.Rooms and apartments have huge raftered ceilings and are furnished simply and well;many have breathtaking views. There's also aday room, filled with lovely furniture and heaps of books to browse. You breakfast in small annexe off the main restaurant;there's cellar for wine tastings and a shop for you to stock up on your favourites.A pool too, and a beautiful chapel in the grounds. The area is a paradise for walkers and there is enough on the spot to keep lovers of history and architecture happy for hours - before the "official " sightseeing begins.

Jahrhundert zuruckreichen. We stayed at the Castello for three nights. Had a great view, it is centrally located in Tuscany, quiet, private, and off the beaten path, but close to so many Tuscan towns. The rooms are large by European standards, the bathroom updated. The breakfasts are very much above the norm and the restaurant provides well prepared, delicious meals - including the best wine we had on our 2 week trip. We enjoyed the pool, which has a spectacular view of the d'Orcia river valley and surrounding countryside. I would definately return, and it also has long term apartments available for those wanting a longer stay in the best part of Italy.

Loved the location and view. Food in the restaurant was good as was the wine. ... This place was incredible. The silence, the views, and the access to southern Tuscany sites were great. I cannot find the words to describe how it felt to spend the first night in a room in one of the apartments in this castle. We had incredible views over forests, vineyards, and river. Late at night there were brief fireworks. Too perfect

The view of the D'Orcia valley was awesome. ... The breakfasts were great and varied each day. The dinners where the best of our 5 week trip. ... Quiet, tranquil, enchanting, peaceful magical the best unique travel experience

The dinners provided by hotel's restaurant are excellent and quite reasonably priced. ... We stayed in a selfcatering apartment and had a wonderful time. It was everything we hoped for and more, a real castle on the top of a high hill with views that went on forever. To sit on our terrace and watch the beautiful Tuscan sun turn the tower above us first gold and then rose was a perfect study of the fabled Tuscan light. All I can say is go and enjoy.

Castello di Ripa D'Orcia is a wonderful, restful and romantic experience. The clean, well-kept rooms, along with a courteous staff and breath-taking views makes this a place to which we will return

(Travel Guides) - TUSCANY & UMBRIA This oasis of tranquillity in the countryside occupies an early medieval castle mentioned as far back as 1218. The Piccolomini family -- who've owned it since 1484 -- transformed several of the buildings into a hotel in 1988. The fairy-tale views sweep across forested hillsides (protected as a nature preserve) capped with other medieval castles, and the 10-minute dirt road that winds its way out here only enhances the feeling of solitude and a quiet retreat. In fact, they emphasize relaxation: The rooms, which require at least a 2-night stay, have phones but no TVs or other worldly temptations. The rooms are enormous country affairs, with antique furnishings and very comfy beds surrounded by thick stone walls and heavily beamed ceilings. There's a reading room with a fireplace and chessboard in the former granary, a quite good restaurant below the rooms (closed Mon), and they have installed an enoteca in the old cantina. The office will provide you with a map for hikes to sights in the surrounding area. Check-in is only from 3:00 to 7 pm; call to arrange arrival at any other time. Facilities: Restaurant (closed Mon, dinner only); bike rental; concierge; nonsmoking rooms, panoramic pool.

Castello di Ripa d'Orcia A 13th-century castle Well off the beaten path, this castle is a wonderful hideaway for those who want to hear only the sounds of chirping birds in the morning and see only the lights of the stars and moon at night. Massive walls surround the castle and former village, or borgo. Here you'll find either the regular guest rooms let on a b&b basis or the self-catering apartments. Guest rooms come in a variety of styles: some have fireplaces, views, or massive beamed ceilings. All are very comfortable with large bathrooms and are furnished in a rustic style. Apartments have kitchenettes equipped for easy cooking, nothing elaborate. The nearest food supplies are 5 km away. The castle restaurant serves highly regarded dinners. A long garden with a fountain is a wonderful place to sit and relax, read, or simply enjoy the sweeping views of vineyards, olive trees, and forest of a surrounding nature reserve. Something special Serenely quiet and away from civilization Castle produces its own wine and olive oil Castle hosts are descendants of Piccolomini family who have lived here for over 500 years What to do: On site : Swimming pool Nearby: horseback riding; cycling; hiking; Siena; Tuscan hill towns

Dear Famiglia Pentini Rossi, We would like to thank you for our wonderful stay at the Castello di Ripa d'Orcia. We have been traveling to Italy for years, and have eaten well, but never as well as at the Castello. The food you serve is precisely what we'd always hoped to find in Italy, and never have before -- "casalinga" food, simple food, cooked exquisitely -- the hardest kind of food to make. So thank you again for all the care you put into serving your guests. We appreciated it, and hope to return with our entire family some day. Best wishes, L. and E.DeSalvo

We stayed several nights in the middle of May, and wish we had more time. Certainly a place we will return to. Our room was wonderful, clean, airy, wonderfully maintained. There's no television, no room phones, and it's at the end of a 5k dirt road, but those are not bad things, it's exactly what we were looking for, a place to get away from it all. You are a short drive from the many sights throughout Tuscany. Cell phone coverage was excellent through, so you can still stay in touch if you want to. Breakfast was quite good, standard pastry, cereal, juices, etc. Additional items like eggs available for purchase. We had dinner one night, the food was excellent, extremely fresh and very authentic. The olive oil and wine they make is excellent, and priced to make you wish there wasn't a 50 lb limit on checked bags.

My princess got to stay at a Castle - Plivine Toronto - 23.06.2011
We spent a couple of nights at Castello di Ripa d'Orcia on our honeymoon. It provided us with a central location to explore Montepulciano, Montalcino and even Cortona! The Guest House, though, can be a destination itself. It is perched on a hill above the Orcia river and surrounded by forest and vineyards that can be explored on foot or bicycle. The rooms are charming, with big old wooden ceiling beams and wonderful views across the river valley. We ate one dinner at the nice restaurant that happily accomodated my wife's vegetarian diet - and were the only ones there (in August!). Truly treatment appropriate for a princess, but value priced.

A unique & awesome Experience -Vancouver BC Canada - 25.06.2011
We have just returned from a 6 week trip in Europe. Castello di Ripa d'Orcia was the hidhlite of our trip. We stayed in many out of the way places as well as well situated bed & breakfasts in major cities in the Netherlands, France and Italy. The owners were very helpful and pleasant. We met the father and both his sons who explained the history of the castle and region. While the father does not speak much English he made an attempt as I did with my limited Italian. The sons spoke English well and over the 3 days there we had several conversations. Our breakfasts each morning were wonderful and varied. We ate dinner at the castle each night and were very impressed with the menu. Our room was large enough to hold 8 people, the vaulted ceiling and the furnishings were incredible along with the view of the Orcia Valley. The bathroom was large and plenty of hot water. There were only 2 other couples there during our stay which allowed for a quiet and intimate stay after 7 days in Rome. We definitely will stay here again and would highly recomend others do the same. It is not a hotel but someones home. This is what makes it so unigue in addition to its' historical nature

Lisa Rude - Idaho -27.06.2011
Fabulous wine and olive oil. ... Our stay, at the castle, was absolutely wonderful. The castle was so peaceful and beautiful. One morning we were awakened by a real live cuckoo bird. At first I thought it was a clock because I had never heard the call of the cuckoo bird before. The dinners were fabulous and our waitress was extremely attentive. We actually preferred the Castello di Ripa D'Orcia's wine, to all the other highly praised 'DOC' and 'DOCG' wines. After dinner we would take a glass of wine and sit out in the garden area, just off of the restuarant. One evening when we stayed past dark, we looked over the castle wall, and there were fire flies all down the mountain. The castle stay was our most relaxing and our favorite part of travels in Tuscany. I am a little concerned about Andrea(Gino) & Philipo finding wives and having bambinos to pass on the wonderful castle, that has been in their family for so many years.

With breathtaking views overlooking the forested Orcia River valley, this authentic slice of medieval Italy is not to be missed. Phillipo and Gino are first-rate and yet invisible hosts; the estate wine was superb and very fairly priced, and the on-premise dining was first rate (best tiramisu we ever ate - the estate matriarch does all the cooking). The premises are very well-kept and the quietness and night sky are unparalleled. Only the Montana wilderness could match it. Days trips to key Tuscan wine areas (Chianti, Montalcino, Montepulciano) towns are easy. Should you decide to stay here, allocate at least 3 nights and dedicate one entire day to stay on premise (to include a good stint at the superbly beautiful hillside pool). This place will quielty overcome you in a wonderful way ... enjoy! P.S. ... the other 3 trip stops were Venice, Cinque Terre and Lake Como/Bellagio

The family run castle is homely - more a family home and certainly not a hotel - but they were extremely helpful and went out of the way to help us out when our car broke down. We shall be going back and we shall be buying more of their excellent wine”

Mr and Mrs Jenkins -USA -29.07.2011
My husband and I stayed at Ripa D'Orica at the end of a two-week stint in Italy. We had a fabulous time and will absolutely stay at Ripa D'Orcia should we be fortunate to visit Italy again. We had a very spacious, comfortable room above the restaurant overlooking the olive groves and Orica Valley. The view was beautiful and was one of the best in Italy! Our bathroom was also very nice and spacious. We ate dinner at the restaurant two of the three nights we stayed and the food was excellent! On our first night we ordered a bottle of wine but were unable to finish the entire bottle. The staff kindly put the bottle away for us to enjoy at our next meal. The food was authentic and home-cooked. I recommend eating at the restaurant at least one night during your stay - you will not be dissapointed!

Skip David, the gondolier ride, and the ancient roman ruins. Leave the airport in Rome, proceed directly to the car rental and drive north along the historic road between Rome and Florence to the Castello and settle in for a week or more. There is no internet, no phone, and no TV. There are sweeping views of olive trees, vineyards and ancient forests sloping away from the castle wall. There is the sound of wind, water, and birdsong. There are no city lights, the night is either jet black or brilliantly illuminated by moonlight. Its easy enough to go find the 21st century that lies down the hill; the Castello di Ripa d'Orcia is a retreat into a timeless place. The descendents of the family that has owned this castle for centuries prepare breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is okay, but dinner is always fun. We step out of our room to enjoy a glass of wine in the garden before dinner. Then we join our fellow guests in the small dining room, order a bottle of what is literally the house wine, and find out what Mama is cooking tonight. Afterwards, we amble back out to the terrace overlooking the valley as we finish our wine and visit with new friends. Upstairs, our room was spacious, the bed great, the bathroom was nearly perfect and the open windows sufficient air conditioning even on the hottest afternoon. Even with the windows open, we enjoyed privacy. Our hosts were gracious, gentle people who appreciated our enjoyement of this place. Mama, who cooks, was a child living in the castle when it was occupied by the Germans of WWII and was present when the castle was shelled by the advancing american army. Ask her sons about the stories .....

Jody Hagler, TEXAS United States - 09.08.2011
The dinners provided by castle's restaurant are excellent and quite reasonably priced.

We would like to thank you for our recent visit. The Castello was as wonderful as we remembered it from our previous visit. We even stayed in the same room, which made the trip particularly special. Our daughter, her husband and mother-in-law have heard us talk about the Castello for years and thus were delighted to experience it themselves. They were equally enchanted. We all found the rooms extremely comfortable and the food excellent. You made us feel very welcome in your beautiful ancestral home. Many thanks for a wonderful visit.

This castle is such a memorable place! The setting is extraordinary, right in the Val D'Orcia in the heart of Tuscany. Our room offered an amazing view as did several parts of the lovely grounds. There is great service from the staff (family-owned since the 1400's!). You need a car to get here but it affords access to some of the smaller towns in Tuscany such as Pienze, Montepulciano, Montalcino etc. Great breakfasts and the option to eat dinner there as well. Highly recommend!” All the best to you! Mary Jo and Steve

I went to the Castle for a wedding anniversary, and we had the most charming time June 7-14,2010. The Owners Madame Aluffi,Gino and Philippo will greet you warmly into their beautifully castle. The apartment was large, clean and very nice, absolutely breathtaking views over the virgin valley. Excellent shower after walking. No television and telephone, we loved the silence. We would appreciate no smoking in the dining room at dinner. Food, wine and service was superb. One week.....one dream. I highly recommend this property and would return again.

Review Castello di Ripa d'Orcia This medieval castle village three miles down a curving, bumpy dirt lane. By Reid Bramblett Price From $125 Once you settle into a cavernous room in this medieval castle village three miles down a curving, bumpy dirt lane, the only contact with the outside world is the pay phone in the restaurant. Accommodations are gorgeous in an antique, minimalist sort of way: very rustic, with massive ceiling beams, thrilling countryside views, and no TVs to disturb the calm. There's a long, narrow garden with a fountain and sunning chairs, battlements once patrolled by soldiers (now guarded by flowerpots) that make for a nice stroll, and an old granary lined with books, gaming tables, and a fireplace for guests. You'll get the feeling that, in passing through the tower gate, you've stepped out of the modern world and its frenetic pace. Details Rate includes breakfast. There's a two-night minimum stay requirement. Open mid-March-October.

Siena - what to see
Situated in the centre-south of Tuscany, the province of Siena extends over the most famous and fascinating Tuscan territories, such as the southern hills of Chianti, part of the Metallifere Hills, the high valley of the Ombrone, Val d’Elsa and Val di Merse, Val d'Arbia and Val d'Orcia, right up to the slopes of Mount Amiata. The province’s capital, Siena, is a magnificent city of art with characteristic lanes, rioni (wards) and towers, handicraft shops and buildings that make it a not-to-be-missed tourist destination for Italians and foreigners. Moving through Siena’s lands and immersing yourself in this atmosphere is a magical adventure, a trip through many landscapes, from dense woodland to old farms, from clay hills to stupendous paths. Furthermore, the territory preserves numerous remains from the Middle Ages, springing out along Via Francigena, the great pilgrimage road to Rome that crossed Val d’Elsa, the city of Siena and Val d’Orcia. Walking through this countryside, you can admire impressive abbeys such as St Antimo Abbey, Romanesque pievi (medieval rural churches) and characteristic borghi (small towns) such as San Quirico d’Orcia or San Gimignano, which preserve their original appearance to this day. The Chianti area, home to the famous wine, is also an enchanting piece of Tuscany that hosts tucked away towns such as Castellina and dense vineyards, such as those in Radda in Chianti or delicious wine and food itineraries. The landscape south of Siena leading towards the medieval centre of Asciano is dominated by the typical Crete, clayey land where erosion has created crevices, openings and cracks. It is an impressive area where the imposing Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore stands out. Val d’Elsa is also very impressive with its characteristic towns Colle di Val d’Elsa, Poggibonsi and San Gimignano, which contains an inestimable art heritage. Val di Merse presents solitary but fascinating places, such as the ruins of St Galgano Abbey, which date back to the 13th century. Even Val di Chiana grants us emotions and wellbeing thanks to its thermal spa centres in Chianciano, Montepulciano and San Casciano dei Bagni. Hills and gullies, Tuscan cypress trees, the river, olive groves and vineyards: this is the landscape offered by Val d’Orcia and protected by UNESCO. Here stand magnificent towns, including Pienza, San Quirico, Montalcino and Castiglione, while to the west, the horizon is met by Mount Amiata with its solitary castle, la Rocca di Radicofani.

Brief Description The landscape of Val d’Orcia is part of the agricultural hinterland of Siena, redrawn and developed when it was integrated in the territory of the city-state in the 14th and 15th centuries to reflect an idealized model of good governance and to create an aesthetically pleasing picture. The landscape’s distinctive aesthetics, flat chalk plains out of which rise almost conical hills with fortified settlements on top, inspired many artists. Their images have come to exemplify the beauty of well-managed Renaissance agricultural landscapes. The inscription covers: an agrarian and pastoral landscape reflecting innovative land-management systems; towns and villages; farmhouses; and the Roman Via Francigena and its associated abbeys, inns, shrines, bridges, etc. Justification for Inscription Criterion (iv): The Val d’Orcia is an exceptional reflection of the way the landscape was re-written in Renaissance times to reflect the ideals of good governance and to create an aesthetically pleasing pictures. Criterion (vi): The landscape of the Val d’Orcia was celebrated by painters from the Siennese School, which flourished during the Renaissance. Images of the Val d’Orcia, and particularly depictions of landscapes where people are depicted as living in harmony with nature, have come to be seen as icons of the Renaissance and have profoundly influenced the development of landscape thinking. Long Description Val d'Orcia is an exceptional reflection of the way the landscape was rewritten in Renaissance times to reflect the ideals of good governance and to create an aesthetically pleasing picture. It lies to the south-east of Siena, its northern boundary approximately 25 km from the city centre. The landscape reflects colonization by the merchants of Siena in the 14th and 15th centuries. They aimed to create a landscape of efficient agricultural units but also one that was pleasing to the eye. The landscape that resulted was one of careful and conscious planning and design and led to the beginning of the concept of 'landscape' as a man-made creation. The landscape was thus created to be efficient, functional, equitable and aesthetically pleasing. It was based on innovative tenure systems whereby the estates owned by merchants were divided into small properties and cultivated by families who lived on the land. Half of the produce was paid to the merchants as rent - sufficient to allow the merchants to reinvest in further agricultural improvements. The farms were mixed farms cultivating grain, vines, olives, fruit and vegetables and with hay meadows and pastures for livestock interspersed between the farms. Farmers practised transhumance with routes to Meremma and l'Amiata. An illustration of the aim for the farming landscape to create pleasing pictures is the persistent tradition of planting roses to embellish vineyards. Cypresses form a striking addition to the landscape planted along routes and around settlements, their regular form punctuating the rounded shapes of the hills and their dark colour contrasting strikingly with the pale landscape The colonization of the landscape involved creating new settlements for farmers and their families and labourers needed to work the land. It also involved greatly enlarging and improving existing villages. The most dramatic example of a planned new town is Pienza, named after its founder Pope Pius II who commissioned in 1459 Bernardo Rossellino to enlarge his village to create an ideal city with cathedral, palaces and civic buildings surrounding a central piazza, thus bringing together civil and religious authorities. Larger fortified settlements on hills include Montalcino, originally a 13th-century frontier post, Radicofani, Castiglione d'Orcia, Ripa d'Orcia and Monticchello. Elsewhere the landscape is studded with smaller villages on smaller hills, some also fortified. In many cases these settlements include remains of 13th-century buildings when Siena first gained control of the area, buildings from the great period of expansion in the 14th and 15th centuries, and also later buildings constructed under Florentine control in the 16th centuries. The World Heritage site is significant in that the large farmhouses assume a dominant position in the landscape and are enriched by prominent architectural elements such as loggias, belvederes, porches and avenues of trees bordering the approach roads. The strategic importance of the area, its connection with Siena, and its development, are all intertwined with the Via Francigena which has traversed the area north-south since Roman times (when it was know as the Via Cassia) linking Rome with the north of Italy and France. Since late medieval times, the route has been used an ecclesiastical route, linking the Church of Rome with its dioceses. It also facilitated a flow of pilgrims and merchants and generally allowed the transmission of people and ideas to enter the region. The route fostered the development of fine churches and monasteries such as the Collegiata di San Quirico in the Abbey of Sant'Antimo. In the Val d'Orcia (and also in Siena) the landscape is strongly associated with utopian ideals. Siena was a sort of 'commune' and the Val d'Orcia a model of sustainable rural development, and both manifested the highest aesthetic qualities. The ideal landscape was painted by Lorenzetti in the Town Hall in Siena in 1338-40; it became reality in the Val d'Orcia and was then immortalized in paintings by artists such as Giovanni di Paolo, and Sano di Petri, who in turn helped to strengthen the ideals.

We have made 3 trips to the Ripa, as we affectionately call it, over the past few years and we absolutely love it. Our most recent trip was in April 2010 and the Ripa was as wonderful as ever. The owners are superb hosts in all respects. The location is spectacular, the buildings surrounding the castello are magical, the rooms are charming and comfortable, the food is home-made Tuscan and is delicious. It is a very special place. We have traveled all over the world, and this still ranks as our favorite place to stay. For atmosphere, charm, architecture and the overall experience, it just can't be beat

Siamo stati ricevuti in modo cordiale e discreto.

My husband and I stay every year in agriturismos in all parts of Italy. This is the best of many very fine ones. L'Oleandro, our apartment for a week, was well appointed, had a good bed, a good bathroom and shower, a beautiful view out over the valley and was only 15 minutes to San Quirico d'Orcia with very easy access to the main roads as we travelled to small towns throughout Tuscany. Their dinners were exceptional - delicious, authentic, many courses and only 25Eur. including wine. Breakfasts at 10Eur. were also delicious. Gino and his mother Laura (the owners) are very personable as is Anna on their staff who speaks English fluently and gives wonderful insider tips on the small towns we were planning to visit. We cannot more highly recommend this accommodation and we will definitely go back again soon.

This place was amazing! We drove down from Florence and it took a little longer to find the place than I expected, so I recommend allowing extra time and planning your arrival around 3 pm, since they close the reception at 6 pm. Our GPS tried to take us down an impassable dirt path, so beware! The next morning, we hiked around the area for a couple of hours before breakfast. We were absolutely alone, and the 360 degree views of the Tuscan countryside were enchanting. The pool has a nice view. Our room was comfortable, clean, and very quiet. The place makes no pretensions to be a full-service hotel, but the quality of the room and the friendliness of the staff exceeded our expectations. The continental breakfast was delicious and nicely presented. Dinner was excellent. The location is a good base for visiting Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano and Cortona.

Dario Oberaus Merano -30.09.2011
Antico borgo medioevale molto suggestivo.

We stayed at RIPA D'ORCIA on our way back from the South of Italy, driving to Siena and we highly recommend it. The rooms are large, spotless clean, and very nicely decorated. The hotel owners are charming and have very good taste for both decoration and gastronomy. San Quirico d'Orcia (the village) is one of the best to discover good local Orcia Valley wine and the owners can recommend several good wine producers in the area. If you decide to stay there, do book at the hotel restaurant as this was one of our best experiences for local gastronomy. prices are reasonable and quality is very high. Overall our experience was really nice and worth the spend and we would highly recommend it to travellers in the area.

My wife & I could not have enjoyed our time more! The owners are wonderful! Everything has been updated beautifully, and the restaurant is amazing!

We spent a wonderful week in Tuscany at Ripa d'Orcia. It is beautifully situated overlooking the hilly countryside with its olive groves and vineyards and not far from the "must see" places. We stayed in the "Apt n. 4", a house by itself with a stunning main room. The well equipped kitchenette has a beautiful arched window overlooking the lovely garden. Ripa d'orcia was a delightful oasis of peace to return to after the bustle of doing the tourist things, and Gino was a very welcoming and helpful host. I still dream of the place and I hope to be back there again one day. Gisela, Canada

Ketty Barros - Winnipeg -Canada -13.10.2011
A place that has breathtaking views and that is situated in the middle of silence. Gino (the owner) is also the most kind and helpful host and guide.

TRUDY L.L. - Australia -14.10.2011
The castle is located about 50 mins from Siena. There are limited rooms and we were lucky enough to score the Valley View room. It had beautiful views of the valley below from every room- including the toilet!! The room consisted of bedroom, dining room, kitchenette and bathroom. All very clean and spacious. Even though we were on our honeymoon my husband and I woke up early each morning to take in the beautiful view. The pool is amazing and just what you need. The restaurant is lovely, it's a set menu but food is beautiful. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We can't wait to return!

Malva Triboti - Brescia -14.10.2011

Ripa d’Orcia Castle - Val d'Orcia In the beautiful Orcia Valley surrounded by profound natural beauty lies the Ripa d’Orcia, one of Tuscany’s oldest and grandest castles. The castle has been renovated to an immaculate standard and provides accommodation in the form of apartments. Ripa d’Orcia spans across a vast area of 320 hectares that include a vineyard and an excess of olive trees. Part of the Republic of Siena’s territorial organisation from the 13th century, this magnificent Italian castle built within the most spectacular of surroundings is definitely worthy of a visit. Ciao, Phillipo (and Gino)! We stayed at your wonderful Castello di Ripa in September, 2010. We thoroughly enjoyed your estate wines, and brought some home to the USA in our luggage. Recently we opened our last bottle, a TERREDISOTTO - DOC ORCIA del 2005 da 0.750 lt. See attached photo. I wanted to share with you how wonderful it was. Please inform the winemaker (your sister, I believe) that they did a fantastic job with this vintage. The wine drank beautifully, and we only wish we had another case to savor! We hope to return some day soon, but in the meantime ... gracie, and be well.

Good Morning/Afternoon Phillipo, We recently spent a month traveling thru Italy. In celebration of our 40th wedding annivesary, we spent two "magnifico" days at Castello Ripa d'Orcia! Our time spent at your property, is without a doubt, the most memorable, relaxing part of our holiday! Our sincere compliments to the kind gentleman who served the absolutely amazing breakfasts and dinner! :) The views from the castle and aong our trek through the countryside were spectacular! We will always fondly remember our time at your castle, and hope to return one day for a longer visit. Thank you for your hospitality. Sincerely, Robert & Katherine Griffitts

Italy has experienced a boom in castle hotel openings in recent years and you’ll find them dotted everywhere no matter which part of the country you visit. Tuscany has an abundance of historical places to stay but if you’re looking for a fairy tale experience, then look no further than Agriturismo Castello di Ripa d’Orcia. This authentic family run property offers rooms and apartments at very reasonable rates (AU$150+). It’s not a true hotel experience, but the property does include a pool and terrace overlooking the amazing countryside. The apartments could be described as rustic but if you’re looking for a castle experience without the 5 stars, then this 13th century estate won’t disappoint.

Great Castle B&Bs
The towering presence of a castle often evokes memories of childhood bedtime stories and their happy endings, as well as images of kings and queens and their life at court. Although it’s likely that you’ll never own your own castle, it is possible for you to rent a room in one. Travel back in time by planning a stay at one of these unique castle bed and breakfasts, where all of your fairytale dreams are sure to come true. Over the course of its long history, the architecture of this 13th-century castle has survived virtually unchanged. The castle itself serves as the proprietor’s private residence, and fully renovated guest lodgings are contained within buildings located in the small surrounding village. The six double rooms, decorated with terracotta floors, raftered ceilings, and rustic furniture, are equipped with private bathrooms and showers. If something larger is needed, then you can stay in one of the property’s eight apartments, each with a spacious sitting area and kitchenette and room enough to sleep up to four people. Within recent years, the ancient cellar has been converted into a tasting room where you can sample the estate-produced wines and extra-virgin olive oil, and the small local restaurant serves up traditional Tuscan dishes. A pool and common living room with a wide selection of books and board games are available for guests, but if a daytrip is what you’re after, this bed and breakfast puts you within 30 miles of Siena, less than 15 miles from Montalcino’s Brunello wine cellars, and within ten miles of the famed cheese-making region of Pienza.
